Sing To The Lord Your Song

There I will go to the altar of God, to God—the source of all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God! Psalm 43:4

Since the beginning of time, music has been a part of God’s creation. I have heard that in the original Hebrew language of the Bible, it says that God sang us into existence. Can you imagine that? On earth, we occasionally refer to an accomplished singer as someone who has “a heavenly voice.” But what must the voice of heaven itself sound like?

If it was through music that we were created, it makes sense that music would also sustain us and heal us. As a doctor, I recognize the importance of music in the healing process. The medical literature is full of studies of how music can help us to heal. Healers who want to specialize in this area can get a degree in music therapy.

We were created in God’s image, so it is no surprise that we also create through music. From a mother’s simple lullaby as she sings her baby to sleep to a symphony of musicians playing their parts to create something bigger than themselves, music reminds us that we are creators too.

I’ve been blessed with children, and now children-in-law, who are gifted in the art of music. It’s hard to imagine our lives without music. One of my good friends, professional musician Steven Curtis Chapman, continues to write some of the most uplifting songs this world has ever heard. The highest praise a musician can receive is that his or her song has touched someone else’s soul. I imagine that’s also why God loves it when we sing to him—because our souls reach out to him.

As a doctor, I know there won’t be a need for my services in heaven. So rather than risk unemployment, I am practicing my singing in the hopes that one day I can get a job in the heavenly choir.
