Set Free From The Lies

Nothing is more exciting than seeing someone who has been held captive by the enemy’s lies set free to live a transformed life.

Peter’s story wasn’t much different from that of thousands of others who have sought fame and fortune in the entertainment industry.

“I’ve been a rock musician for years,” he said when he came in for treatment. “Made some bad choices over that time.”

Recently, his dream had become a nightmare.

“I don’t know where else to turn. My voice is shot, and the tremors from the alcohol prevent me from playing my guitar very well. I need help.”

In every corner of Nashville, you can find a similar story. Music City is full of the emptiness of broken dreams and unfulfilled aspirations. Hurting hearts are assuaged with alcohol, and emotional pain is numbed with drugs.

As a musician, Peter knew this world better than I did. The years of smoke-filled bars, whiskey shots, and empty beer cans had finally caught up with him.

Miraculously, a thirty-day spot in the rehab unit had opened up that very day, and Peter checked in. I knew many of the staff who worked there, and I was confident that, along with tips on how to stay sober, they would introduce Peter to Jesus when he was ready.

The next time I saw Peter, months later, his smile was something to behold. He seemed happy and peaceful—as if the old demons were gone.

“What are you doing now that you’re out?” I asked.

“I’ve decided to go back to school to become a counselor,” he said. “Jesus found me when I was in a very dark hole. He pulled me out, dusted me off, cleansed my heart and soul, and called me his, even though I’d run from him for years. I want to help others find the truth and stop listening to the lies of the enemy.”

“Peter, I’m happy to see the transformation that God has done in your life. My prayer is that you’ll use your experiences to bring the same life-changing truth to others in Nashville who need to hear it.”

Thank you, Father, for setting me free from a life of hopelessness and struggle. Through your Son, I’m capable of all things, and I praise you for the strength you’ve given me.
