Rest In The Lord
Rest In The Lord
Praise the LORD who has given rest to his people Israel, just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the wonderful promises he gave through his servant Moses. 1 Kings 8:56
Our world is becoming more complicated and stressful. I often tell my patients that humans weren’t created for a rat race. We need more rest. What if we went to sleep when the sun set and woke up when the sun rose? That’s more rest than we typically allow ourselves to enjoy.
My day begins at five o’clock each morning. The great thing about waking up that early is that I get to enjoy a twenty-minute hot shower and then a twenty-minute commute to work. I drive east, watching the sun rise as I travel. My mornings start with a sense of calm and awe for the Creator and the plans he has for my life that day.
I once heard a preacher say that God rested on the last day—after his work—but our week begins with a day of rest. In fact, the first day that Adam and Eve knew was a day of rest. That wasn’t by accident. God created us to begin our days rested and refreshed.
God also wants us to rest in him and his words. Take time before you start your day and your week to be still in God’s presence. Rest in his promises, even if it means going to bed a little earlier so you can get up a little earlier. This simple discipline will pay off with many returns throughout your day.
TODAY’S RX
Tonight, go to bed a little earlier so tomorrow you will be rested and can spend more time showering in God’s promises. Repeat daily.
Jesus, you say in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Thank you for that promise. I choose to rest in you today.
