Rescued From Death

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” John 11:25-26

All of medicine is dedicated to taking away our pain and sustaining life. Yet no matter how hard medical professionals try—no matter how many new drugs, treatments, or surgeries we invent—we cannot stop death.

We have found ways to sustain life through organ replacement, cloning of new parts, and regeneration through stem cells, yet those can also fail, and inevitably our bodies will give way. It seems that in the end, death wins. We are mortal. There is nothing we can do to change that.

But can there be victory over the grave? Can we triumph over death? Is there a life preserver that can rescue us from death’s swirling waters?

The answer, of course, is a resounding yes, yes, yes! Jesus is our Savior. He did and will continue to conquer death.

Jesus undid Lazarus’s physical death and gave him an extended life on earth. Though eventually, even Lazarus died a second physical death. But this time he died without fear because he joined Jesus in heaven.

Jesus conquered the grave with his own physical death and resurrection. We, too, will experience a physical death through which we will discard our earthly bodies. But once we reunite with Jesus, death will be no more.

I have had the privilege of sitting beside the deathbeds of hundreds of believers who have made this journey. I have watched them go without fear. They enter the next world at peace and with joy on their faces.

I do not fear the death of my body because I know that with death comes the freedom of everlasting life. Jesus asked Martha if she believed that. Do you?

To have everlasting life, you must believe that Jesus is the Savior who came to rescue you.

Jesus, knowing that you have conquered the grave, I do not have to worry about dying. Thank you for the promise of everlasting life with you.
