Remember Me And Show Me Favor

Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people; come near and rescue me. Let me share in the prosperity of your chosen ones. Let me rejoice in the joy of your people; let me praise you with those who are your heritage. Psalm 106:4-5

A big city hospital can be a scary place for some of my patients, and sometimes it can be overwhelming for me too.

One day, I called the regional hospital on behalf of Diana, who had presented in our ER with heart attack symptoms and needed to be seen by a cardiologist. The staff said they were full, but they would do what they could.

By the time I reached the hospital, Diana had been moved to the last room at the end of a very long hallway, in a far corner of the hospital. It was a miserable experience walking through endless cold and sterile hallways looking for her room.

When I arrived, it felt isolated and dark with only a single small window, but I knew it was the only available room.

“I’m so glad to see you!” Diana said. “You’re the first familiar face I’ve seen here!”

I knew what she meant; she was the first familiar face I’d seen, as well.

Diana looked frightened as I sat down beside her bed. “Don’t worry. I know this place is big and can seem scary. But God is with you, and he allowed me to be here to help you navigate through the confusing maze of hallways and all the paperwork.”

She smiled.

“The specialists here are top-notch,” I said. “And the cardiologist will be here in a short while.” As a country doctor, my presence at the bigger hospital was often more about making the patients comfortable than for medical purposes.

Diana and I chatted until the cardiologist arrived. He ordered some tests, and we learned that Diana had a cardiac arrhythmia. In the cardiology lab, they were able to quickly diagnose and fix the abnormality in her heart’s electrical system.

In medicine, we all do what we can to make our patients feel better. The cardiologist was there to steady her heartbeat, and I was there to steady her nerves.

Don’t be afraid. Wherever you are, the Lord is with you, and you are not alone. He will never leave you.

Lord, help me to be still and trust in you when the path ahead is frightening. I know you’re beside me, lighting the way.
