Rekindle Your Commitment

Rekindle Your Commitment

You will be blessed above all the nations of the earth. None of your men or women will be childless, and all your livestock will bear young. And the LORD will protect you from all sickness. He will not let you suffer from the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all your enemies! Deuteronomy 7:14-15

One can only imagine the conditions in Egypt, where the Israelites were held in bondage. They likely lived in close quarters with little food and without clean water. And as with so many other groups kept in slavery, disease was likely to be rampant under those conditions.

When God freed them, he gave them healthy food, fresh water, and a Sabbath rest for renewal. All of these were new blessings to the Israelites. However, it wasn’t long before they lost patience in waiting for the Promised Land and wanted to return to the lives they had known in Egypt.

Perhaps there has been a time in your life when you felt as if you were held in bondage to an unhealthy lifestyle. You ate and drank foods that weren’t good for you, or you ate and drank in excessive amounts. At some point, you realized that you needed to be free from this bondage, and you or your doctor put together a set of healthy guidelines and restrictions. The good news was that, when you followed the new plan, you lost weight and gained control over other ailments, such as diabetes or hypertension, that had plagued you for years.

But then you started thinking that perhaps you could ease up on some of the new restrictions. You wanted to dabble in your old way of life, even if just for a little bit. But suddenly, those old diseases flared up again.

When we’re focused on living healthy, holy lives, we strive to do what’s good for us. Sometimes we slip and fall, but we can always get back up and recommit ourselves.
