Our Wonderfully Creative God
Our Wonderfully Creative God
Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth, and no one will even think about the old ones anymore. Isaiah 65:17
The breathtaking evidence of God’s creation is all around us, if only we would take the time to look. I remember watching with Karen—before she and I were even dating—the most incredible sunset I’d ever seen. I knew she felt the beauty, too, because we were both very quiet as the baby blue sky turned to pinks and yellows and then deepened into an almost indescribable rose hue as the final rays of sunlight faded into the horizon.
Karen told me later that at that moment she realized just how creative God could be. This was during a time when she was still uncertain about the sincerity of my newfound faith, and she had been resisting my attempts to build a closer relationship with her. But when she saw that sunset, she realized that if God could use colors and light to paint the sky with such splendor, perhaps he could also bring an agnostic to faith through our evenings of memorizing Scripture together. She felt as if she needed to be faithful to whatever God’s call was on her life, even if it meant stepping outside of her set expectations to consider a relationship that, until then, she hadn’t been open to.
Another time when I felt completely in awe of God’s creativity was when I dissected a human cadaver in medical school. It was so obvious to me that there was something different about humanity. How could we have possibly come into being by accident or random chance? I was intrigued, fascinated, and confused all at the same time. But mostly I was curious. That curiosity took me onto a path that led me back to God.
God is the source of all creativity. There is no limit to what he can do. I can hardly wait to get to heaven to see the fullness of all he has done.

List some examples of God’s creativity that you’ve observed. If God’s creation on earth is that marvelous, can you imagine what heaven must be like?
God, I praise you for making the earth and the sky and the sea, and everything that has life; for the heavens and all the planets, moons, and stars. But no matter how glorious things appear here on earth, I know they are but a dim shadow of what awaits us in heaven with you.
