Nothing Will Separate Us From His Love

Nothing Will Separate Us From His Love

I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

One of the first books I studied as a young Christian who hadn’t yet matured in his faith was the book of Romans. When Satan tried to attack me or discourage me from the battle, Paul’s letter provided comfort. Romans gave me the strength to press on when times were trying.

A few years ago, Karen and I visited Italy. While we were in Rome, we heard stories of the early Christians and the struggles they endured for their faith. These Christians were at war with the political and religious leaders of their day. Many were tortured or put to death in the cruelest of ways.

Rome was also where Paul was imprisoned. It was from a prison in Rome that he wrote so many of the letters that give us such great comfort today. Walking through the city, Karen and I were deeply moved at the thought of what Paul and the early Christians suffered as they kept their faith alive despite the persecution they endured.

These Christians knew that hundreds, perhaps thousands or tens of thousands, of their brothers and sisters would die for the faith. Though they didn’t yet have Paul’s written words, they held the promise of Jesus in their hearts, knowing that not even death by evil leaders would separate them from God.

When I am with patients who are facing uncertain health outcomes, the verses I most often refer them to are found in Romans. Though my patients’ battles are different from the brutality the ancient Christians faced, they are nonetheless in a battle for their lives. To press on, these patients need the same reassurances of God’s promises that the early Christians did.

We’re blessed to have Paul’s words in written form so that whenever we have doubts, his words can remind us of God’s love for us.

Do not be anxious or fearful. Nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Thank you for the promise, Lord, that nothing can separate me from you—not even the hardships and difficulties I face. Remind me of this always so that I may not be quick to despair, but steadfast in trusting you.
