Miracles Of Faith

Jesus turned around, and when he saw her he said, “Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed at that moment. Matthew 9:22

The EMS radio squawked, “Forty-five-year-old . . . white . . . female. Emergency transfer to your facility. ETA of five minutes. Heart rate: 175. Shortness of breath. Chest pain.

When the patient arrived and was hooked up to a heart monitor, the information on the screen led us quickly to a diagnosis of supraventricular tachycardia—an abnormally rapid heart rhythm.

“You’re having a cardiac arrhythmia,” I said to the anxious patient, “and we’re going to give you some medication to temporarily stop your heart.”

She looked at me like I was crazy. “You’re going to stop my heart? What if it doesn’t start back up?”

Her question was valid. It crossed my mind every time I did this procedure. But my training and experience gave me confidence that her heart would restart. It was my job to instill that same confidence in her so I could do what I needed to do to help her.

“God designed your heart with a reset button, kind of like your computer. You may feel a little funny when your heart stops, but if you trust the knowledge he has given us, soon your heart will be back in rhythm.”

We gave her the medication, and for the next few seconds—though it always seems like an eternity—we watched the flat line on the monitor. About five seconds later, we got the first beat. Gradually, the patient’s heart rate increased to thirty beats per minute—then forty, sixty, and finally seventy as it resumed a normal sinus rhythm.

When I think about that day, I realize that the patient had tremendous faith in me and in the science of medicine—and that allowed us to treat her and heal her. Every day, God asks us to place our trust in him and allow him to do what he knows is best so we can be healed.

But how often do we question his plan? How often do we choose to put our faith and trust in something else? God has given us much medical knowledge that we can use to heal the body. The Bible reminds us to put our faith in Jesus, who is the ultimate healer.

When life seems out of control, allow God to reset your heart.

God, so often I race through the day until I’ve run myself into the ground. Help me to be still and have a quiet heart so that I may live in the rhythm of your grace.
