Mind Of God

May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. Ephesians 3:18

The human mind is truly a miracle. No other creature’s brain has the capacity for abstract thought. Look around at the countless examples of what men and women have first imagined and then built. Where did this unique thinking machine come from? What separates us from the rest of creation? Why is it that we’ve been given the ability to read and write the words on this page?

These brains of ours are such an amazing gift that I feel we have a responsibility to use them in equally amazing ways. Do we use our minds to know more about our Creator? Do we work to expand our understanding in every direction so we can comprehend the love he has for us? Do we use our ability to understand in order to help one another live fuller, more God-directed lives?

In the medical world, most professionals—whether they are believers or not—use their minds to help others. This is true in many other professions as well, such as teaching. Too often, though, people have used their ability to imagine and create to cause disruption and destruction in the world. What a waste of such a miraculous gift!

If I had a prayer for all of humanity, it would be that we recognize how privileged we are to have such power to think and imagine and that we would all use that power to meditate on the idea in today’s verse. But even with a lifetime of mental concentration, I am not sure that we could ever fully comprehend the love of God. Remember, it was the loving mind of God that created our beautiful brains in the first place and gave us the ability to think about him.

God, expand my mind through your Word so that I may know you better. Help me to use my words and thoughts for good, not evil, and provide me with opportunities to continue growing in my knowledge of you.
