How Long?

How Long?

I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain. . . . Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior. Psalm 38:17, 21-22

“How long will it take until I feel better?” It’s something we all want to know when we’re not feeling well. Have you ever asked that question and received a less-than-satisfactory answer? Maybe your doctor wasn’t forthcoming with a prognosis, or maybe the specialist, after looking at your test results, was afraid to tell you that your condition might not improve.

Chances are, if you’re in pain, you’ve already considered what life might be like if you never felt any better. What hope is there in a situation that doesn’t promise an end to the pain?

As a doctor, I’ve treated patients with chronic, debilitating, and progressive illnesses. For some of them, there is no cure or answer this side of the veil. In those cases, I do my best to prescribe medication to take the edge off the pain and to allow the patient to live life as fully as possible. Even in the direst of circumstances, I don’t want anyone to give up hope for healing.

I’ve often found that even when people’s bodies are wracked with pain and their hope in the health-care system is declining, their faith in God may be vibrant and growing. Frequently, at these times, patients find new hope and a renewed appreciation and love for family and friends. They develop a deeper longing for, and trust in, our heavenly Father. The trust they once reserved for their doctors and medical science is now fully placed in God.

If you’re suffering right now, I pray that God will lift up your weary soul and give you strength for the day. I pray you will take each day and each breath with the knowledge that he loves you and that he is in control, even when you’re struggling. Though healing may not be available for you here and now, hope is still accessible. If you trust in Jesus, one day, in the blink of an eye, you will have a new pain-free body, and the suffering and anguish of this world will be gone.
