Healing Faith

A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” Mark 5:25-28

Lisa came to my office frustrated and exhausted. She was out of money and out of hope.

“I’ve seen a dozen doctors, and no one has been able to help me. They think I have some kind of neurological problem, but all the tests come back negative. I’ve used up all my insurance, and I’m nearly broke. Can you help me?”

“I’m not sure I can do more than the other doctors,” I said. “But I can pray that God will reveal the problem to us and lead us to a solution.”

Looking at her chart, I understood why the other doctors thought she was suffering from a seizure disorder. Still, none of the treatments had worked. Several tests had been repeated multiple times, with inconclusive results. No wonder she was going broke! I scratched my head and prayed. “Lord, help me know where to search for an answer.”

As only God would have it, I’d been talking with a cardiologist recently about a new technology at the time—a thirty-day event monitor. I hoped that maybe this new technique would give us the information we needed to diagnose Lisa’s mysterious ailment.

For two weeks, nothing happened, but on day fifteen, we captured the data we needed to diagnose a heart condition. Lisa had a pacemaker put in, and she’s been doing fine ever since.

In today’s verses, a woman who had tried every option and spent every resource in search of healing had only gotten worse. Still, when she heard about Jesus, she believed he could heal her if she could get close enough to touch his robe.

Is that the kind of faith we have? Too often, we take things into our own hands and turn to God only when nothing else works. What would happen if we turned to him first?

To be healed, we must have the faith to reach out to Jesus.

Lord, help me to have faith in you. Whether I’m suffering physically, emotionally, or spiritually, show me that all I need is you. Thank you for your great healing power.
