Faith-based Medicine

Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence we cannot see. Hebrews 11:1

When you visit the doctor and he or she outlines a treatment plan for your illness, you trust that the outcome will be what you expect. If the doctor says that this antibiotic will cure your sore throat, you take the pill and expect your throat to get better. But just as you put your trust in your doctor, doctors put their trust in their medical training and experience. Doctors don’t just make up their treatment plans; they recommend a course based on what has been clinically proven to work for other patients.

We call this evidence-based medicine. Typically, the results of a study are reported as a percentage of positive results versus a percentage of negative results. Seventy percent positive is considered a great outcome. We’d like to have a 100 percent positive outcome, but that never happens. There are too many things we can’t control that can cause treatments to fail. For example, an infection may develop resistance. Or one patient’s body may not absorb the medication in the same way that someone else’s body does, and thus the treatment won’t be effective in all cases.

There’s only one physician I know who can predict and produce a 100 percent positive outcome for everything he prescribes—the Great Physician. So why don’t we put our trust and faith in the good doctor who guarantees his treatment is 100 percent effective every time?

Some say it’s because we can’t see him.

That’s not a problem for me. I have been at the bedsides of hundreds of dying patients over the years. And I have personally witnessed glimpses of heaven as many of them have crossed to the other side. I’ve watched God keep his promises. If you haven’t personally seen the end result evidence and you wonder if it’s prudent to place your trust in something you haven’t seen, I remind you that we place our faith and trust in things we can’t see all the time. For me, there is enough evidence that God keeps his promises that I will fully trust him until the day I die. I have faith in his faithfulness.
