Directions For Life

If you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15

Ever since Karen and I got married, the last sentence of today’s verse has been framed and prominently displayed on the wall of our home. We felt it was important to have this declaration and promise as the foundation for our life together, for our family, and for all those who enter our home.

When we start any journey, we need to know where we are going. If we take a step without having a destination, or at least a road map, there’s a good chance we will end up lost and adrift. This is also true with our health. If we don’t know where we’re headed, we could end up stumbling through life, eating what we want, rarely exercising, and picking up other unhealthy habits.

To be healthy, you must have an intentional plan for your life. If you want to change something about your health, you need direction. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to be able to climb stairs without getting winded or run a 10K? Do you want to get rid of the pain in your knees or get rid of a sinus infection?

It’s only by knowing where you’re going and what the outcome or destination will be that you can make progress toward your goal. That’s why the first thing I do with my patients is take their medical history and discuss their symptoms. The history of where they’ve been helps me know where they are going.

After I make a diagnosis, the most important part of the visit occurs. Does the patient want to get better? If so, we put together a treatment plan—a direction for the patient to follow. We also know the desired destination or outcome before we even start. We may want to lower blood sugar levels or blood pressure numbers. We may want a cough to subside or a headache to go away so the patient can sleep.

If you choose to follow the Lord, you need to know where you’re headed. We know that eternal life will be the final outcome.

Few choices have a known and perfect outcome. But following Jesus is one.

Lord, I declare for myself and my family that we will serve you. Help us to faithfully follow after you in this journey of healing and beyond. May we always stand on Christ, the solid Rock.
