Choosing Your Master

Choosing Your Master

O LORD, I am your servant; yes, I am your servant, born into your household; you have freed me from my chains. I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD. Psalm 116:16-17

Perhaps you’re preoccupied with work to the exclusion of time with God. Or maybe you’re involved in a destructive relationship. It could also be that an addiction or an obsession stands between you and your heavenly Father.

Satan will attempt to enslave us in any way he can. And often we won’t realize we’re in bondage to something until it’s too late. Do a quick inventory:

  • Is there something unhealthy that consumes your mind and body?
  • Are you working too much to try to prove yourself worthy?
  • Are you seeking fame and fortune while neglecting your physical, emotional, or spiritual health?
  • Are you in a relationship that takes you away from God, your family, or friends?
  • Are you addicted to anything? Common addictions include food, sex, pornography, tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.

You don’t have to answer yes to every question to know you’re in a bad position—answering maybe to just a single question could be enough to suggest that you’re being mastered by something that is stealing your life.

The good news is that God sent his Son, and then his Holy Spirit, to free us from our chains. We don’t have to be a slave to anyone other than Christ. The life you dream of is possible. You can have peace, comfort, and a deep joy that can’t be taken from you by circumstances. All you have to do is reach out to God. He holds the key that will unlock the chains that tie you down.

Take the first step to your new life now. I have patients who have received their twenty-year coin, signifying two decades of freedom from their old life of addiction. They tell me they keep it in their pockets as a reminder of the life they left and the freedom they have found in Jesus. Have faith that Jesus will help you leave behind your old ways. He has already assured us that it’s possible.
