Chasing Away The Darkness

The creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. Romans 8:21

Driving to work in the morning, I look toward the eastern sky. As the sun stretches and yawns, it chases darkness into the shadows. The sky’s canvas in front of me is constantly moving and changing as the first pink and golden tendrils of day light up the horizon.

The colors never rest. Like a mood lamp slowly changing colors, the sunrise moves through cranberry, pinks, and golden brushes before choosing the brilliant yellow that will hang throughout the day.

I marvel at how it looks new minute by minute and day by day. No artist or digital camera could replicate the masterpiece that lives and breathes each morning before my eyes.

Some say that creation speaks God’s glory. I believe it shouts. But too often we’re blind and deaf. We focus not on the burgeoning life before us, but on our weakness and inevitable decay. Though we are citizens of a dark, broken world, the beauty of creation reminds us that it won’t be that way for long.

As each new day shines the light of heaven into the dark shadowy crevices of this world, the sunrise reminds us that the powers of darkness cannot survive in the heat and brilliant light of day.

As God’s children, we were made for the light, not the darkness. That’s why we respond with joy to the sunrise. It is but a glimpse of what we will experience when all darkness is defeated. The sunrise is merely a reminder that one day soon we will see another Son rise. And that Son will never set.

Take courage; it won’t be long. The glorious return that the morning sky foretells is imminent.

Turn your eyes toward the risen Son, who will chase away all darkness, disease, and decay.

Jesus, I never have to worry about losing sight of you; you are everywhere—in the beauty of a sunrise, in the calling of the birds, in the dew on the grass. Fill me with your light today so that my heart may be full and I can sing your praises. Thank you for my many blessings.
