Blue Eyes Shining

Blue Eyes Shining

I will lead blind Israel down a new path, guiding them along an unfamiliar way. I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them. Isaiah 42:16

“My dad seems to be stumbling a lot more,” Maggie said. “Can I set up an appointment for him to come in, so we can figure out what’s going on?”

I had known Thomas and his family for more than twenty-five years. He and his children and grandchildren had one distinctive trait in common: the most beautiful deep-blue eyes I’ve ever seen. Thomas’s eyes reflected sparkles of light and yet were as calm as the sea. I would recognize his kin anywhere because of those distinctive blue eyes.

“So, Thomas,” I said, one afternoon when he came into my office “What seems to be the problem? Maggie seems worried about you.”

“I think I’m going blind.”

“Hmm, let me see.” I pulled out my light and looked into his eyes. “They don’t seem to be as bright and clear as they used to be. Have you noticed changes in your vision?”

“It seems like I’m stumbling over things more often. Especially when I go out at night.”

When I had him look at my eye charts. I could see a noticeable drop in his visual acuity. As it happened, his vision was hindered by the yellow-green reflection of cataracts that had ripened rather quickly.

“Thomas, I’m going to refer you to a good ophthalmologist whose office is not too far from here. I’ll see if he can fit you in this week to check things out a little more closely.”

Thomas ended up needing two cataract surgeries, and he stayed with his daughter while he recovered. A month later, when Maggie brought him in for a follow-up appointment, Thomas was walking faster and had more pep in his step.

“The cataract surgeon fixed my vision!” he said. “ It’s great to be able to see all of God’s creation again.”

He winked at Maggie, and I could see that both father and daughter once again had that sparkle in their deep-blue eyes.
