Be Present

Encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11

As a doctor, I am sometimes called upon to deliver bad news. Occasionally, these discussions involve preparing a patient for the end of life. These conversations are never easy, and I take time to walk my patients down this dark and lonely road.

What I’ve found is that these moments call for a flashlight—a spiritual flashlight. I want my patients to know what the next life offers and that they can have it. I want them to see death as a glass half-full and to be optimistic and encouraged, even as their time on earth draws to a close.

I often tell my patients that I wish I could join them on this journey to our heavenly home, and I mean it. I truly want to be with the Lord, and I’m a little envious that they are in line ahead of me. Even those who are on their deathbeds and are no longer speaking will smile and give my hand a slight squeeze when I say those things.

As parents, I know we often tell our children when they’re hurting that we would gladly substitute ourselves for them if we could. Each of my children has heard both Karen and me say this. It somehow gives them the courage to endure the pain.

I don’t think it’s unusual that the best military leaders in history were always the ones who led in the battle. They willingly put themselves in harm’s way alongside their soldiers. Troops follow this kind of a leader anywhere—even into death.

As you walk with people facing death, it can be hard to know what to say to them. My advice? Just let them know you’re with them.

In the worst of circumstances, there are no adequate words. Just be present.

Lord, help me to be present with those I love this holiday season. Do not allow me to be distracted by the world, but help me cling to what matters most—the celebration of your coming into this world.
