Ask In His Name

This same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

Being in a strange place can be nerve-wracking—especially if you’re eighty-eight and accustomed to living on your own in familiar surroundings.

Raye was a proud woman who had always been independent. She lived alone and drove herself to the store. But one night, she tripped over Trixie, her precious poodle, and fell and broke her hip. The experience of falling had frightened her, but staying in the hospital frightened her more.

“Hi, Raye, I’m Dr. Anderson. I’m the medical director here,” I said. “The nurses told me about your fall and that you are concerned about staying here.”

“Doctor, I’m afraid,” she said timidly.

“Afraid of what?” I asked.

“I’m afraid I might need something, and I won’t be able to get it.”

“Do you need something now?”

“No, but I might tomorrow or in the middle of the night,” she said with a worried look on her face.

“I know this is a new place for you. I’m hoping and praying that everything goes well as you rehabilitate your fractured hip,” I said, trying to reassure her. “But in case it doesn’t, I’ll tell you what I tell all my patients. All you have to do is push that call button and ask for what you need. If they don’t have it, you tell the nursing staff to call me, and I’ll do my best to get you whatever you need.”

Raye eased back into her pillow. “Thank you,” she said.

For the next few days, she was confused and had trouble remembering where she was when she woke up. Fortunately, her family was nearby and very supportive during her stay in the hospital. She recovered nicely from her fracture and eventually was able to go home.

Jesus makes the same promise to his followers that I make to my patients. If you need something, ask for it in his name, and trust that he will give it to you. Even when we aren’t feeling needy, there is great comfort in knowing that we have someone we can ask if we do.

Don’t be afraid to ask Jesus for what you need. He promises to “supply all your needs from his glorious riches.”

Jesus, thank you for providing for my needs and blessing me with many physical comforts. Help me not to be afraid when I stumble and fall but to call on your name for healing and support.
