Approaching The Throne Of The Omnipotent

Recently, Karen and I caught a local production of The Wizard of Oz. I was struck by something I hadn’t thought about before—each character in the show is broken. The Cowardly Lion needs courage. The Tin Man needs a heart, and the Scarecrow needs a brain. But without Dorothy to escort them to the Emerald City, they would have remained forever stuck right where they were. They needed Dorothy to approach the great wizard on their behalf. They needed her to intercede for them.

Going to the doctor’s office can feel like a trip to see the wizard. Most patients aren’t really sure what doctors do, why we do it, or how it’s done. They’re afraid we’ll cause them pain or that we’ll discover something embarrassing about them. At such moments, having a personal advocate, a Dorothy, can give them the courage to ask for what they need.

I see patients every day who are accompanied by a Dorothy. Whether it is a parent, friend, son, or daughter-in-law, a Dorothy advocates on the patient’s behalf. He or she will coax the patient to speak by saying, “Tell the doctor what you were telling me,” or “Do you have any questions you want to ask?” A Dorothy can make sure that both the patient and the doctor have all the necessary information to help the patient get well.

Are you ever afraid to ask your doctor important questions?

Do you ever wish you had a Dorothy with you at your appointments?

What about in your spiritual life? Do you ever feel as if you need an advocate to represent you at the throne of God?

The good news is that we have better than a Dorothy standing with us; we have God’s own Son interceding on our behalf before the Father. Because Jesus is our advocate, we can submit our requests to the all-powerful God of the universe with confidence.

Unlike the characters in The Wizard of Oz, we never need to worry or be afraid because our advocate—Jesus—is always right beside us.

When it’s time to return to our forever home, Jesus is the one who will guide us to where the yellow brick road turns to streets of pure gold.

Jesus, I’m broken and in need of you. Thank you for walking beside me, interceding for me, and restoring all that has failed in my life. I know that, with you, I can be made whole.
