A Prayer For Our Children

Those who fear the LORD are secure; he will be a refuge for their children. Proverbs 14:26

When I was still an atheist, Karen challenged me to pray a simple prayer: “God, if you are real, reveal yourself and show me your ways.”

That prayer was answered in spectacular fashion when I married Karen and we later had four children. As soon as our children were born, and every day since, we have prayed for them. We have asked God to use them for his glory in the uttermost parts of the world. And in the spirit of that first simple prayer that I prayed, we’ve also asked God to make himself known in very personal ways in their daily lives.

With Kristen living in Ireland, Ashley in Los Angeles, David in Birmingham, and Julia nearby—but working with an organization that helps orphans all over the world—we are amazed at God’s faithfulness. God has been with each one of our kids, and they are all committed to following him.

To this day, we continue to pray for their protection and well-being. But we also recognize that the safety net God has placed around them is greater than any protection Karen and I could ever supply.

Now, with two grandkids on the way, we spend even more time in prayer. For this next generation, we continue to pray a variation of the prayer that Karen first challenged me with: “God, reveal yourself to these grandbabies and show them your ways.”

Because of our confidence in God and his faithfulness, we can wake up every morning without worrying about the news headlines. Though our kids’ and grandkids’ paths through life may not be easy, we now have generations of evidence to prove that God not only protects his own, but he also promises never to leave them or forsake them.

The same God who protects you and blesses you will also protect and bless succeeding generations.

What a comfort this promise is, Father. You shepherd your sheep, keeping a watchful eye over every one of them. Be with my family today, and protect them from harm. Use me and my family members for your glory.
