A Marriage Restored

O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you restored my health. Psalm 30:2

When Kevin came to my office, before I could ask about his symptoms, he blurted out, “I have a confession to make. I left my family.”

To all appearances, Kevin and his wife had a great family life with their two kids. They attended church together, never missed one of their kids’ games, and appeared to be doing well financially.

“I saw your wife a while back, and I knew something was up. Why did you leave?”

“I travel a lot for work. On one of my regular trips, I met someone. We’d have dinner, and she would listen to me when I talked. I felt like she understood me better than my wife did.

“But you appeared to be living the American dream.”

“I felt trapped, and I wanted my freedom. I told my wife I needed some time alone.”

“Well, now that you’re alone, you don’t seem very happy.”

“I thought moving out would give me some room. But now this woman is pressuring me to go through with a divorce and move to California. That means leaving my kids behind, and I’m not even sure I like this woman that much.”

Kevin had built a web of deceit, and now he was all tangled up in it. Realizing the destruction that loomed ahead, he wanted to turn back.

“If you want out of this mess, you have to confess everything to your wife. I’m sure she’s willing to work on your marriage. It will be hard, and it will take time, but it’ll be worth it. And I know God will bless you if you turn back to him.”

Kevin thought about it for a minute. “They offer marriage help at our church. Maybe we could try that. I guess I’d rather make my first marriage better than take a chance on a second marriage that doesn’t feel right.”

I encouraged Kevin, and we prayed together before he left.

It wasn’t easy, and it didn’t happen overnight, but Kevin and his wife worked hard to restore their marriage. The turning point came when they decided to put God at the center of their relationship. Three years after Kevin’s change of heart, God blessed them with a third child.

TODAY’S RX

Sometimes when we cry out to God, we must confess our sin before he can restore our mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Father, please be the center of my life. I want to depend on you alone for direction in my relationships and my career. I know that when I place my life in your hands, I’m bound to prosper.
