A Joyous Stampede Of Healing

For you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. Malachi 4:2

Back on the farm, springtime is when we’d release the newborn calves from the confines of their calving pens. They’d burst forth from the barn and race toward green pasture, seemingly defying gravity in their pursuit of freedom.

For patients in a doctor’s office, the exam room can feel as confining as a calving pen; and for those who are sick, the last thing they feel like doing is frolicking. So I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the exam room one day to see Harvey, a regular patient of mine, who had a rare tumor on his pituitary gland. He seemed surprisingly jubilant considering his health situation.

“Hi, Doc!” he said with enthusiasm. “I just got back from the Mayo Clinic. I think you’re going to have to update my chart.”

“Okay, why’s that?” I said.

“I went there hoping for a cure, but instead the doctors were baffled.”

“Why? What happened?”

“Well, before I went, we all prayed for God’s guidance for the doctors as they treated my tumor. But my aunt wasn’t satisfied with that. She said, ‘I’m praying for your complete healing.’”

Harvey’s eyes twinkled as he continued. “I’m here to tell you that the miracle my aunt prayed for happened! The tumor is gone! The doctors at Mayo couldn’t believe it, but God has cured me!”

Pure joy radiated from his face.

“Sure, I know the tumor could come back someday, but right now I’m convinced that God has cured me. Put that in my chart,” he said as he nearly skipped out the door, like a calf bursting forth from the barn.

God wants us to experience the kinds of healings we see in the New Testament. He wants all of us to have freedom from the chains of sin and disease. And when we’re healed, he wants us to shout it from the mountaintops and leap for joy.

Though I made the proper notes in Harvey’s chart, I didn’t have to. The joy of God’s faithfulness was something I would never forget!

Jesus, I do not thank you enough for the freedom I have in you. You have paid for my sin in full by going to the cross. You have healed me with your love. Because of this, I will praise you all of my days.
