A Journey Of Faith

Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed—and you know how crippled he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has healed him before your very eyes. Acts 3:16

The man who stood in my office said, “I didn’t come to see you because I need a doctor; I came to see you because I need something else.”

“Tell me more.”

“I was born with a heart defect,” he said. “I had my first surgery before I was a year old. The cardiologist has continued to monitor my situation, and he says I need one more surgery. I hope this one will be my last. I have it set up with the hospital in Nashville for next week.”

“Okay, but how can I help you?”

“I didn’t even know who you were until about a month ago when a friend of mine gave me a copy of Appointments with Heaven. I got to know you through that book.” Then he smiled and added, “And I also got to know Jesus. While reading your story, I rekindled my faith in him. I was drawn closer to Jesus, and my love for him grew. Now I’m having this heart surgery, and I realize there’s a chance I might not wake up from it. But I know that Jesus is with me. Your book helped relieve me of so much fear. I’m no longer afraid of dying, and I look forward to my life, whether it is here or in heaven.”

His words were touching, and I felt a few tears welling up. I was grateful that God had used my story to reach someone who had distanced himself from him. “Thank you for telling me,” I said.

“I came to see you because I wanted you to pray for me during the surgery and my recovery. I know this might be an odd request, but I just wanted another believer to pray with me.”

It was pretty unusual for someone to stop by my office and ask me to pray with them on their first visit, but it was obvious that God had opened this door. “I’d be honored to pray with you,” I said. “And I’ll pray that everyone you meet will know that it’s your faith in Jesus that healed you.”

Lord, you’ve proven faithful to me time and again. Help me to share stories of your faithfulness with others, encouraging them to come to know you and experience your great love.
