Pillar of Cloud by Day, Pillar of Fire by Night

When God brought his people out of Egypt, they didn’t march directly into the Promised Land. Instead, they wandered in the desert for forty years. But they did not wander aimlessly or alone.

The LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people. (Exodus 13:21-22, NASB)

This was no ordinary cloud in the sky. It was the visible manifestation of God’s personal presence with them. He was there to guide them and protect them in the form of this column of cloud. When the cloud moved, the people followed it. When it stopped, everybody stopped. The pillar of cloud by day changed to a pillar of fire at night. All night long the radiance from that cloud brightly illuminated the entire camp so that no night ever touched them.

Perhaps the Pharisees saw this connection when Jesus stood up in the Temple and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life” (John 8:12). Jesus had come to be a physical and personal manifestation of the presence of God in their midst; he was there to lead the people to the Promised Land of God’s presence. But the Pharisees did not want to follow. They wanted to put out his light.

As we make our way in this world, we may long to have something as visible and tangible as a pillar of cloud or fire to show us when to move and where to go. But Jesus left us with something better—Someone far better—to guide us. Jesus promised, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. . . . He lives with you now and later will be in you” (John 16:13; 14:17). The Holy Spirit is the column of cloud and fire sent to guide us, not from the sky around us, but from inside us.

Pillar of cloud and fire, you guide me by your Spirit. He guides me into truth as he illumines your Word and makes it understandable and unavoidable. I cannot make it through the wilderness of the world without your personal presence, and I would never want to be without you. Guide me. Illumine my path. Lead me through the wilderness to your Promised Land.
