He Will Lift the Curse on All Creation

As a result of Adam and Eve’s sin, God’s curse fell not only on humanity, but also on all of creation. “The ground is cursed because of you,” God told Adam (Genesis 3:17). The apostle Paul described it this way: “Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time” (Romans 8:20-22).

Just as Adam’s promised offspring broke the curse on Adam and Eve, he also set in motion the breaking of the curse over creation. The Bible ends with John’s vision of the coming day when the Curse will be gone for good: “I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared” (Revelation 21:1).

God’s purposes of redemption through Christ have never been limited solely to humanity. His intention has always been to reveal his glory in and through the creation and re-creation of the natural world. He pictured this grand plan in the Old Testament story again and again. It wasn’t only Noah and his family in the ark, but also the entire animal kingdom. Abraham and his Israelite descendants were not only promised spiritual renewal but also the fruitful land of Canaan. The prophets, too, spoke of a future in which the full glory of God’s Kingdom will exist, describing it in not only spiritual but physical terms—the wolf will lie down with the lamb, the desert will blossom with flowers (Isaiah 11:1-9; 35:1-10; 65:17-25; Ezekiel 36:33-36).

When John wrote that he saw the new heaven and new earth coming down out of heaven from God, he was not describing a literal descent of a second earth from the sky. He was describing the final culmination of the regenerating work of Christ. The heavenly country Abraham longed for (Hebrews 11:16) is not a land somewhere in the sky; someday this earth will be a new earth—an earth in which there is no more curse.

Great Redeemer, not only have you redeemed my life from the pit, you are redeeming your creation. One day I will live in this glorified creation with you. Then I will no longer have to fear natural disasters or deadly viruses or dangerous animals. You will lift the curse on all your creation.
