All Nations Will Be Blessed through You

In Genesis 12, we read that God initiated a plan to bless the entire world by making a promise to one man—Abram. “I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:2-3).

When God chose Abram to found a new nation, he made sure Abram knew that the Jewish nation was being created for the world, not just for themselves. Their mission was to “be a blessing,” and their destiny was to serve all the other nations. With this promise to Abram, God commenced an amazing two-thousand-year history that would, in the fullness of time, bring forth Jesus as a Savior not only for Israel, but for the whole world.

When Simeon, who had been waiting and watching his whole life for the Messiah, held the infant Jesus in his arms, he saw Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises to bless all the families of the earth. “He is a light to reveal God to the nations,” Simeon said (Luke 2:32).

Paul wrote that the promise made to bless all the families of the earth through Abram was fulfilled through Christ.

The Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would declare the Gentiles to be righteous because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, “All nations will be blessed through you.” . . . Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham. (Galatians 3:8, 14)

John was given a vision of this promise becoming reality. He saw “a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb” (Revelation 7:9).

God’s purpose was and is and always will be to bless the world with the blessings promised to Abraham. And Christ was and is and always will be the fulfillment of those promises.

I may not be a child of Abraham by human bloodlines, but your blood, Jesus, has made it possible for me to be a child of Abraham by faith! How I long for the day when I will stand before your throne along with people from every nation. We will bless you and thank you for extending to us the blessings you promised to Abraham.
