Jasmine’s school gives out awards each quarter. Each letter in her school’s motto, Bobcat Pride, stands for a character trait students should have. Jasmine won the “I for Integrity” award. But she was confused. She didn’t know what integrity was, so she had no idea why she’d won the award. When Jasmine looked up the word in the dictionary, she read that integrity is “complete honesty, following a strict moral code.”

Jasmine learned that integrity means always doing the right thing even if no one else is watching. Jasmine’s teacher said she appreciated Jasmine’s honesty and knew she could trust Jasmine even if she, the teacher, stepped out of the classroom for a minute.

The book of Proverbs talks about integrity too. People of integrity walk boldly because they know they’re doing the right thing. They have God’s blessing and protection. This doesn’t mean that nothing bad will ever happen to honest people. As can be seen in the book of Job, bad things do happen to good people. But people with integrity will miss out on the trouble that’s caused by being dishonest or deceitful. They stand firm against temptation to do wrong.

People who lack integrity walk their own paths, following their own desires and rules. Proverbs says they will slip and fall. How much better it is to walk in safety!

You might be honest when people are watching you, but what about when they aren’t? Be a person of integrity and do the honest and right thing even if no one else would know the difference. God and you always know.
