Many times the Jews who believed Jesus was the promised Messiah were shunned by family and friends who didn’t believe. The early Christians needed to band together to help each other. Some of the people who were shunned by their families had no money, homes, or food. But the other believers shared with them.

Because the early church was growing so fast, it was important to organize how things were shared so no one was left out. Stephen was one of the men in charge of making sure everyone who needed food received it.

Stephen was courageous in his faith. He spoke out about his beliefs. Some people didn’t like Stephen, so they made up lies about him. He was taken before the Sanhedrin and asked if the lies were true. Stephen took that opportunity to speak to the Jewish leaders about God. He started by reviewing Jewish history. He showed how the Jews had continually rejected God and how they’d rejected the Messiah.

The religious leaders and some of the people were so angry with Stephen that they dragged him out of the city and threw stones at him until he died. As he died, Stephen prayed for forgiveness for those who hated him. Stephen was the first Christian martyr (a person who dies for his or her beliefs). More persecution of believers followed, but at the same time the gospel spread to new countries.

Stephen was full of compassion and wisdom. He was always ready to help those in need and to share his faith. He is a good example for you to follow as you live out your faith in your school and community.
