King Hezekiah did his best to get rid of idol worship in Judah, but the next king, Manasseh, rebuilt the pagan shrines and even sacrificed one of his own sons (see 2 Kings 21). He practiced sorcery in the Temple and murdered some of his people. He turned the hearts of the people away from God. They lived that way many years. Then Josiah became king at the age of eight.

Josiah wanted to follow God, so he began getting rid of the idols. He tore down the shrines and altars. Then Josiah went a step further. He decided to have the Temple of God repaired. During this time, the high priest found the Book of the Law. It was read to Josiah. The king was upset because he realized the people hadn’t been following God’s rules. He wanted to know more about the things he’d heard.

Some of the men went to the Temple to find Huldah, a prophetess of God. She was known for speaking God’s word, and the men knew she’d be able to tell Josiah what he wanted to know.

The message Huldah gave them wasn’t a happy one. She told them God said that since Judah had walked away from him and served false gods, the Lord’s anger would be poured out on them. But since Josiah had humbled himself before God and repented when he heard the Book of the Law, God’s anger would not be poured out against Judah in Josiah’s lifetime.
