Standing Firm in the Storm

Have you seen pictures of the Leaning Tower of Pisa? This tower began leaning while it was still under construction. The tower was built on sandy, marshy soil, and it had a poor foundation. After the first three stories were built, the tower started to sink. The foundation didn’t support its weight, and the soil underneath wasn’t firm. Foundations are important. If a building is constructed on an inferior foundation, the whole building is at risk.

Jesus told the story of the foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain came down, the winds blew, the streams rose, and the house fell flat. The wise man built his house on a foundation of rock, and the house stood firm through storms.

Jesus used the story to help the people think about their lives. Everyone builds his life on some kind of foundation. Some people build on the weak foundations of riches, popularity, or talents. Some build on the strong foundation of Jesus Christ.

When the storms of life come—a friend moving, a family member dying, struggles in school, and other problems—it will be easy to tell what kind of foundation you have. If Jesus is your foundation, you can trust God in the hard times and ask God for strength to endure. You can look with hope to the future.

Some people build on rock, some on sand. Which foundation are you choosing?

How can you build on a firm foundation? Trust Jesus as your Savior. Read your Bible and pray to God, so you can get to know him more. Ask God to help you, and seek advice from godly people when you have decisions to make. Then, when the storms in life come, you will stand strong.
