Saul Is Anointed King

Saul Is Anointed King

Q: What was Saul looking for when he met Samuel?

  • a. his lost donkeys
  • b. a well to draw water
  • c. a place to stay

There was a rich and influential man named Kish who was from the tribe of Benjamin. He had a son named Saul, who was the tallest and most handsome man in the land. This is who God had chosen to become king. In fact, God told Samuel that Saul would show up at Samuel’s house the next day.

Donkeys were all-purpose animals in Bible times. They were used for transportation and farming. Even the poor owned a donkey. Since Saul’s father was wealthy, he owned many donkeys, but they were missing.

Saul and a servant were looking for the donkeys in the hill country. They couldn’t find them. The servant had heard that Samuel was a man of God and that the things he said always came true. Saul and the servant went to look for Samuel to see if he could help them locate the lost donkeys.

When Saul and the servant met Samuel, God told Samuel that Saul was to be anointed king. Samuel did this, and then he told Saul to go home because the donkeys had been found.

Later Samuel called all the people together to tell them Saul would be king. But Samuel couldn’t find Saul. Where was he? He was hiding among baggage! Saul wasn’t sure he should be king, but God worked in his heart. At first Saul obeyed God and was a successful king, but later things changed.

For You

When Saul obeyed God, things went well. When God calls you to do something, he will give you the wisdom and strength to do it. But if you don’t listen to him, he won’t work through you to accomplish his plans. Be determined to listen to God and follow him.
