Jezebel’s Death

Jezebel’s Death

Q: How did Jezebel die?

  • a. God struck her with leprosy.
  • b. She was thrown from her window.
  • c. She was devoured by fire.

In the northern kingdom (Israel), wicked Jezebel was influencing people to do evil. She turned them from God to idol worship, and she ruthlessly killed innocent people.

Jezebel’s own death was prophesied when she had Naboth killed in order to get possession of his vineyard for her husband Ahab (see the May 25 devotion). At that time, Elijah the prophet told Ahab that dogs would lick Ahab’s blood where they licked Naboth’s blood, and that dogs would devour Jezebel’s body in Jezreel, where the vineyard was located.

Jehu was chosen by God as king of Israel and given instructions to wipe out Ahab’s family. Jehu went to Jezreel to see Jezebel, but Jezebel taunted him from her window. Jehu called, “Who is on my side? Throw her down.”

Jezebel’s own servants tossed her from the window, and she was trampled under Jehu’s horses’ hooves. When servants went to bury her later, they found only her skull, feet, and hands. Dogs had eaten most of her body, just like Elijah had prophesied.

Jezebel was wicked and had no respect for human life. She killed innocent people such as Naboth and many of God’s prophets. Because of this, she had a horrible death.

In her lifetime, Jezebel had power and wealth, but at the end her prestige and worldly goods did nothing to help her. What a tragic way to live and die.

For You

Jezebel’s death was the end of a wicked woman. For the Christian, death is more than the end of life on earth. It’s the beginning of eternal life. Your money and the things you own will be worthless, but the good you’ve done for Jesus will last.

Answer: b

“Throw her down!” Jehu yelled. So they threw [Jezebel] out the window, and her blood spattered against the wall and on the horses. And Jehu trampled her body under his horses’ hooves.   2 Kings 9:33
