Jesus Walks on Water

Q: When Jesus walked on water, his disciples thought he was a

Jesus’ disciples were crossing a lake in a boat. A strong wind came up, and soon the waves were high and powerful. The boat was being tossed about. It was dark, and the disciples wished Jesus was with them. He’d calmed the storm with his words the last time (see the September 16 devotion).

The disciples looked out into the dark and saw a figure moving toward them. They were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost, but it was Jesus walking on the water to join them. When Jesus climbed into the boat, the wind died down, and all was calm again.

The disciples had witnessed Jesus performing so many miracles that they should have been expecting Jesus’ help and looked for him, but they didn’t. The disciples were focused on the rough waves around them instead. So even when Jesus approached them walking on the water, they didn’t recognize him.

Sometimes when people go through problems, they try to solve them alone. Like the disciples, they are looking only at the situation, not at what God may do. God wants his children to look to him during tough times instead of trying to get through them alone.

No matter what situation you are facing—even if it’s a problem you’ve gotten yourself into—God wants you to turn to him for strength and wisdom to deal with it. Don’t panic. Don’t act in a hurry. Take time to pray and wait for direction from God.
