Jesus’ Teachings
Jesus’ Teachings
Q: Where was Jesus when he gave the Beatitudes?
- a. on a mountainside
- b. on the Sea of Galilee
- c. in the desert
Some of Jesus’ most famous teachings are part of what is known as the “Sermon on the Mount” because they were given on a mountainside near Capernaum. Jesus’ teachings went on for many days as he talked about the law, authority, money, anger, making a difference, and more. The most familiar part of that sermon is probably the Beatitudes.
The Beatitudes tell us how to be blessed by God. They are keys to happiness (see Matthew 5:4-10, ICB):
- Those who are sad now are happy. God will comfort them.
- Those who are humble are happy. The earth will belong to them.
- Those who want to do right more than anything else are happy. God will fully satisfy them.
- Those who give mercy to others are happy. Mercy will be given to them.
- Those who are pure in their thinking are happy. They will be with God.
- Those who work to bring peace are happy. God will call them his sons.
- Those who are treated badly for doing good are happy. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them. (Matthew 5:4-10, ICB)
During Jesus’ time, the Pharisees lived by strict religious laws, but following the laws didn’t help them have a relationship with God. When Jesus spoke the Beatitudes, they were different from how the Pharisees lived and believed. The Beatitudes are good attitudes all Christians should have. God will bless those who live for him.
