Jesus Is Betrayed

Judas Iscariot was one of Jesus’ 12 disciples. Even though he saw Jesus’ miracles and heard Jesus’ teaching, Judas didn’t love Jesus the way the other disciples did. When Judas became one of the disciples, he may have thought Jesus was going to set up a kingdom on earth, and the disciples would have important jobs in that kingdom.

Judas was the treasurer for the group, and money was important to him. One day Mary of Bethany anointed Jesus with expensive perfume. Judas thought she’d wasted the perfume. It could have been sold, and the money could have been given to the poor. But Jesus praised Mary for the love she’d shown.

Judas realized that following Jesus was not going to make him rich or important. He betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver and the approval of the religious leaders.

Jesus knew that Judas would betray him, yet he chose Judas as a disciple anyway. This was part of God’s plan for our salvation, but in order for the plan to be fulfilled, someone had to betray Jesus to the enemies. That person was Judas.

Judas’s betrayal didn’t catch God by surprise. He knew everything that must happen in order for us to have salvation.
