One day Jesus was at a wedding along with his mother and his disciples. During the celebration, the wine ran out. (This was not like our wine today. It was more like grape juice.) Wedding celebrations often lasted a week, and everyone was invited to come and take part. To run out of wine would have been an embarrassing situation.

Mary realized the wine was gone and told Jesus about the problem. She may not have been asking him to do a miracle, but just for a solution. Jesus had not yet performed any miracles, but he chose to do one at the wedding.

Jesus ordered the men to fill six large pots with water. Then he told them to dip some out and take it to the chief steward. The chief steward tasted it and declared it to be much better than the previous wine.

By doing this miracle, Jesus met the need at hand—in this case, the need for wine for a celebration. That may not seem like a big deal. It’s not like healing someone, calming a storm, or raising someone from the dead. But it made a difference to those hosting the celebration and to those attending the festivities.

Jesus still meets needs. He may not be here to do a miracle in person, but he answers prayers, gives us wisdom to make good decisions, and orchestrates events. He changes hearts, and he changes lives.
