Hosea’s Unfaithful Wife

Hosea’s Unfaithful Wife

Q: What was the name of Hosea’s unfaithful wife?

  • a. Gomer
  • b. Mary
  • c. Jezebel

Hosea was a prophet to the northern kingdom, Israel, during the time they turned from God to idols. God told Hosea to marry a woman named Gomer. Gomer was unfaithful to Hosea, and she left him for other men. Although Hosea was heartbroken, he loved his wife and went after her to win her back.

Hosea and Gomer are a picture of God and his people. The people in the northern kingdom ignored God and no longer worshiped him. They turned to other gods and to their own pleasures and desires. Even in the midst of their wickedness, God offered forgiveness and hope. He wanted them to repent of their sins and return to him, but they didn’t.

God calls us to be his children and to be faithful to him. When you turn from God’s standards and choose ungodly standards as your own, you are unfaithful to him just as Israel was. Walking away from God is often a gradual thing. You listen to music with bad words and attitudes, or use bad words you hear others use. You spend less time reading your Bible and more time hanging out with friends who don’t share your faith. As time passes, you give more time to the wrong things, and less time and commitment to God. It’s easy to find yourself far from God. If this is true for you, God is calling you back to himself. Just as Hosea went to bring his unfaithful wife back home, God wants to bring you back to relationship with him.

For You

Each time you compromise your values and principles, you take a step away from God. It can be so gradual that you don’t notice at first. Examine your life today and see if you are still strong in your commitment to God or if there are areas of your life you need to turn over to him.
