Hearing God

Q: When Moses entered the Tabernacle, he always heard the voice of God coming from where?

Has God ever spoken to you? He probably has, but not in the same way he spoke to Moses. When Moses went into the Tabernacle to talk with God, he heard God’s voice speaking to him out loud. The voice came from between two cherubim above the Ark of the Covenant.

That was the way God spoke to Moses, but how does he speak to you now? God might speak through his Word, the Bible. He might speak to you through the pastor’s message at church or through your parents’ advice. God might also speak to you through the Holy Spirit and your conscience.

The important thing is to listen to God. And if you aren’t sure something is from God, check it against the Bible. God will never ask you to do something he speaks against in his Word. So if you think you’re hearing God say it’s okay to lie or steal in a certain situation, that’s not God. The Bible says those things are sin. Another way to know if you’re hearing God is to ask a more mature Christian, such as a parent, pastor, or Sunday school teacher, for advice.

God spoke to Moses aloud, but today he often speaks in the stillness of our hearts through his Holy Spirit or his Word.

For You

If you don’t hear God speaking to you, you might not be listening. You should feel guilt when you do something wrong. That’s the Holy Spirit letting you know what you did was wrong. You may also feel a prompting to fix a problem or situation while reading your Bible. That’s God speaking to you too. Slow down and spend time each day reading your Bible and giving the Lord time to speak to you.
