God Chooses Moses

Sometimes you might think you’re too young, too ugly, too shy, too loud, or too inexperienced to do much for God. But the people God used to do his work in the Bible—including Moses—were far from perfect.

One day Moses was watching the Hebrew slaves working hard and being treated poorly. When Moses saw an Egyptian beating a slave, he looked to see if anyone was watching. Then he killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand. He thought no one had seen.

Someone had seen, though, and word got back to Pharaoh. Moses fled from Egypt to Midian. While he was sitting by a well, seven daughters of a Midianite priest, Jethro (also known as Reuel), came to get water. Some shepherds came by and made them leave, but Moses came to their rescue and watered their flocks for them.

When Jethro heard about Moses’ kindness, he sent his daughters to invite Moses to eat with them. Moses stayed with the family and eventually married Zipporah, one of the seven daughters.

Time passed, and the pharaoh who wanted to kill Moses died, but the Hebrews were still slaves in Egypt. God chose Moses to be their deliverer. There were stronger and wiser men God could have chosen, but he picked Moses. God chooses unlikely people so everyone can see it is God doing the work, not people.

Don’t worry that you don’t have enough talent to serve God. He is looking for your willingness, not your abilities. God created you, so he knows what you are capable of. If he chooses you for a job, it’s because you are the perfect person for it.

Many years later, when Moses had grown up, he went out to visit his own people, the Hebrews, and he saw how hard they were forced to work. During his visit, he saw an Egyptian beating one of his fellow Hebrews.
