Goal for the New Year: Know God’s Word

Q: The psalmist says that God’s Word is more desirable than what?

Yesterday’s devotion talked about spending more time with God as a goal. Reading your Bible is part of that goal. But it might be time to do more than just read your Bible. It might be time to start digging deeper in God’s Word.

You might feel like you’re too young to study the Bible, but it’s not too early to start. It may be as simple as choosing a specific passage to read in the Bible and finding out more about it. When you do that, you build yourself up against sin and temptation (see Psalm 119:11 and Ephesians 6:17). You earn God’s approval (see 2 Timothy 2:15). And you grow in your faith (see 1 Peter 2:2-3).

There are many ways you can begin learning more about God’s Word. You can pick one book of the Bible to focus on. There are good study Bibles that will tell you when and why the book was written and the person who it was written to. That will give you background information to help you understand what you read. You may want to start with an epistle such as Philippians or James.

You can pick a topic such as love or patience and find all the verses you can about it in the Bible. A Bible concordance will help you do that. It’s an alphabetical list of words like you’d find in a dictionary, but instead of giving you a definition, it gives you Bible verses that use that word.

These are just three ideas for getting started in learning more about the Bible. Talk to a parent, Sunday school teacher, or youth pastor for other ideas.
