From Fear to Faith

The Psalms give us a glimpse into the thoughts and feelings of their authors. We experience their joy in psalms such as Psalm 145 which begins, “I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever. Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness.”

We experience the author’s repentance in psalms such as Psalm 32 where David rejoices that God has forgiven his sins: “Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.”

We feel David’s despair in psalms such as Psalm 13: “O LORD, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand?”

In Psalm 91, written by an unknown author, we share the author’s feelings of protection and victory found in God: “The LORD says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

The book of Psalms is filled with a variety of thoughts, emotions, and even history and prophecy. It chronicles the psalmists’ journeys from fear and despair to faith and victory. The book of Psalms is a good place to turn when you need encouragement, courage, advice, or peace.
