The book of Ruth may seem like a nice love story between two people who followed God, but it was more than that. God orchestrated the events to bring about the birth of Ruth and Boaz’s son Obed:

• the famine that took Elimelech’s family to Moab
• Ruth meeting Naomi
• Ruth gleaning in Boaz’s field
• the marriage between Ruth and Boaz

Obed was Jesse’s father. And Jesse was the father of David, a well-known king and an important link in Jesus’ family tree.

God didn’t let the fact that Ruth was a Moabite keep her from playing a part in Jesus’ earthly family tree. Her love for God was real, and that mattered more than her background.

Ruth didn’t know that God was using all the events in her life as stepping-stones to the future, when a Savior would be born to take away the sin of the world. In the same way, we don’t know the impact our lives will make after we’re gone. That’s why it’s important to make each decision a good one.

It was because of her faithful obedience that Ruth left the legacy she did, even though she didn’t have any idea at the time. It’s through faithful obedience that God will make your life count for things that will last long after you go to live with him in heaven.
