A Sign of Faith

The Israelites had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years because they didn’t have faith that God would help them defeat the Canaanites and take the land (see Numbers 14). After that time, they were ready to trust God.

The Israelites saw God miraculously cause the Jordan River to stop flowing when the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into it (see Joshua 3). The Israelites crossed over on dry land. Then they saw God cause the walls of Jericho to tumble to the ground because they had the faith to follow his plan (see Joshua 6).

The Israelites weren’t the only ones with faith. A woman named Rahab had faith too. She lived in Jericho and would have been killed when the Israelites conquered the city. But after she saved the Israelite spies, they promised to spare her if she hung a scarlet cord in her window. Rahab knew that the Israelite God was real. She knew her city would be destroyed. And she had faith the spies would spare her as promised, so she hung the cord out the window.

The scarlet cord was a sign of Rahab’s faith, and that faith saved her and all of her family who were gathered in her house when the city fell. (You can read more about Rahab in the March 23, 24, and 27 devotions.)
