You’ll Never Be Shaken

This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.”

Isaiah 28:16

THIS IS A passage predicting the coming of Jesus. He was the “foundation stone” in Jerusalem. Today, a cornerstone—or “foundation stone”—is almost meaningless. It’s mostly decorative. But in that time, a cornerstone was laid first to ensure that the rest of the building would be upright and not easily broken or knocked down. That’s why Isaiah says that this stone is “firm and tested.” What does this mean?

First, it’s “firm.” That makes it hard to be dislodged, destroyed, blown over by weather conditions, or anything of the sort. With Christ as the foundation stone, the one that holds the building together and makes it strong and unbreakable, the building—his church, including the saints of all ages—would never be moved or obliterated. God founded his church on a rock, Jesus himself, who could never be moved or toppled.

Second, it’s “tested.” Our cornerstone, Jesus himself, was put through the fire. His enemies tried hard to destroy him. But he held. He proved himself. That’s the reason we can trust him. We can be sure no one can ever turn him against us or tempt him to do something wrong or evil. He will always do the right thing and can never be overcome by any force.

When we trust him, we’re promised a firm and tested Savior. When we believe in him, we will never be shaken.
