Why Me?

In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.

1 Peter 5:10

SERRO WAS A young immigrant who came to America seeking religious freedom, having suffered greatly in his home country. He found that freedom soon after he arrived. He joined a church, began to speak about the problems in his home country, and eventually began to support missionaries who went there to spread the gospel. In time, he even returned.

When Christians face terrible suffering, they sometimes ask, “Why me?” “What did I do wrong?” “When will this end?” “Why is God letting this happen to me?” It’s natural and normal to ask such questions. Often, God does not answer until they actually emerge from the trial, perhaps years later, free and whole. But, like Serro, they find God faithful.

As you learn, grow, and see God work in your life, you will understand too what God means by “a little while.” Some might think that could be a very long time. But when you see God use you and you grow in grace, you realize your sufferings were minor compared to the glory you have seen as God did marvelous things through you and in you. We can trust that the end of all suffering eventually comes, and then God will restore you and put you back on that foundation that will never crumble.
