Loving Without Seeing

You love [Jesus Christ] even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

1 Peter 1:8-9

HOW CAN WE love someone we can’t even see? How can Christians trust a person who is invisible?

By faith. By faith, we know Jesus is with us, watching, helping, guiding, empowering. By faith, we believe that this world is not the end—that God will take us to a place where we will never suffer again.

When Jill became a Christian, the first thing she said was, “I’ve met God. He’s real. He’s there. I know it. He talks to me. He listens to me. It’s the most amazing thing.” Some of her friends thought she was a little crazy. But that’s what faith does—it opens our eyes so we see the truth about our world, about God, about life.

Some call such things foolishness or just plain stupidity. They say we’ve deluded ourselves. They tell us to get with it and realize this world is all there is.

But they’re the ones who are deluded. Though we can’t see God, we sense him in our hearts and in our lives, working around us and in us. Though we don’t always know what he is doing or will do, we trust his promises in the Bible that he will get us through and be with us every step of the way. Others can then see our inexpressible joy, and though they can’t see the source, they know God is real.
