Knowing And Doing

Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.

John 13:17

THIS STATEMENT OF Jesus comes just after he washed the disciples’ feet in John 13. In that passage, Jesus advises the disciples to follow his example of servanthood and submission to the needs of the moment. On that evening, the disciples marched into the upper room to share the Passover. No slave or servant greeted them to wash their feet. Thus, one of the first things Jesus did as they all seated themselves was to shed his robe and go about washing their feet.

It was an example for these proud men to follow. They all knew that they should not sit to dine with dirty feet. Nasty odors, dust, and other bits and pieces of refuse stuck to those feet. Yet after three years together, learning from Jesus about their mission to serve, meet needs, and offer help to anyone and everyone, the disciples still didn’t get it.

God honors those who serve, even in the most menial tasks. In his world, a janitor is as respected and as important as the president of our country. God’s promise to those who serve others is that they will be blessed by him in special ways they wouldn’t want to miss.
