God Provides

[All creatures] depend on you to give them food as they need it. When you supply it, they gather it. You open your hand to feed them, and they are richly satisfied.

Psalm 104:27-28

TOO MANY PEOPLE today place their trust in science, technology, and advances that have made our lives easier. Unlike the farmer of years ago—who thanked God for the rain that made his crops grow, for the crops themselves, and for the harvest at the end—we tend to think God isn’t involved in the process of our getting what we need to survive.

A man came to breakfast one morning and announced he was a “self-made man.” His wife regarded him with a smile and said, “Well, you have just relieved God of a tremendous responsibility.”

We may think we tilled the fields and produced the crops or made ourselves rich and prosperous, but today’s Scripture verses point to the real truth: God gave us the ability to till those fields and produce the crops. In the end, the good things in life are all from him, even if some think they’ve done it all themselves.

Real satisfaction in life, though—that’s the tricky part. And that’s the end result of his gifts. Is satisfaction found in living in a nice home or having a filet mignon set down before you? To be richly satisfied is to know the one who provides these things and the love for us that is behind the provision.
