God Blesses The Humble
God Blesses the Humble
God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
Matthew 5:5
THE WORD TRANSLATED “humble” here is an interesting one. It could also mean “meek” or “gentle.” The image often given is of a horse that is gentle and mild tempered, even though it’s a huge animal and could easily stomp the life out of anyone who rode it. Some have talked about this kind of humility as “power under control,” which is appropriately illustrated by a gentle horse.
Similarly, people who have great power in their minds and thoughts but control that power will inherit the earth. These are the kinds of people who can lead others, guide them into God’s wisdom and blessing, and gently prod them to do good.
Think of what such people could accomplish in the world—those who motivate not by threats, dire warnings, or force but by kindly and gently taking charge and enabling people to find how they best fit into our world. They could change everything. And that’s why Jesus promises such people will inherit the earth.
